The Fisheads are cartoon characters, which depict men in their “hunting” mode (which mode, my favourite Fishie says, is a permanent state for men). They were created for the humorous Fisheads series, in 2008, composing of 6 artworks interlaying women, Fisheads and text messages (SMS).
These artworks are expressing patterns and interactions between men and women close to me and also around me, precisely at the time where everybody was playing with texts messages as way of enticing conquest.
It is not a feminist statement; it is a way to say: “I love you the way you are but stop taking me for an idiot”. Let’s face it, there is a lot to laugh about between us sexes and we are just all playing the oldest game in the world, we haven’t invented anything new so let’s not be so pompous about it. If you hit a bull’s-eye, then for god’s sake, it’s because we want you to: we are on the hunt too...just with different tools.
Usually, the elements of my artworks do not have an independent life. The Fisheads however have become quite vivid and amongst friends, they became quickly part of our vocabulary. They are “men on the hunt”. They are also our male version of Playboy Bunnies. We love them and laugh about them. They are our “blondes”.
This is what I share in the Fisheads FanClub.
The article written by Robert Bernier from the French-Canandian art magazine “Parcours” has captured the essence of the series very well and for those of you who don’t read French, I strongly suggest you go back to school or wait until the day I can translate the flowery expressions he’s used. For the lucky ones, go here.
